The
T-129 is an attack and multirole combat helicopter currently under development
for the Turkish Army. An enhanced version of the Agusta A129 Mangusta,
the T-129's development is now the responsibility of Turkish Aerospace
Industries (TAI), with AgustaWestland as the primary partner. The ATAK
Helicopter Program started on July 2, 2008 with the aim of providing
the Turkish Land Forces Command with Attack/Tactical Reconnaissance
helicopters. Under the program, after being customized according to
user needs, 50 firm and 41 optional Attack/Tactical Reconnaissance helicopters
will be produced and delivered to the end users starting from the third
quarter of 2013. The helicopters will also be provided with integrated
logistics support for their whole life cycle. T129 helicopter has the
capability of high maneuver and flight stability, excellent performance
for “high and hot” conditions, 3 hours endurance and long
range and all-weather day and night operations with the 5 bladed rotor
system, wheeled landing gear, powerful advanced technology LHTEC-T800
engines, new generation advanced FLIR sighting system, integrated helmet
mounted display, effective, precise and distinctive weapon systems,
digital cockpit architecture, mission computers and advanced flight
and fire control systems. High performance, excellent maneuvering capability,
asymmetrical weapon loading, low visual, aural and radar signature,
high level of crashworthiness and ballistic tolerance enables T129 helicopter
multi-role, excellent operational capability in the most hostile of
battlefield environments. TAI announce the succesfull first flight of
T129 prototype in August 2011. The first flight, conducted by TAI’s
test pilots, of T129 “P6” prototype helicopter has timely
and successfully been completed at TAI’s facilities in Akinci
(Ankara). In May 2013, TAI announced that the Turkish Army is on the
way to take delivery of the first home-made T-129 ATAK Advanced Attack
and Tactical Reconnaissance helicopter. Speaking at the IDEF exhibition
in 2013, company representatives stated that the army is expected to
take delivery of its first aircraft in the coming weeks. |

The
all new T129 ATAK features high power engines and uprated rotor dynamics
to deliver superior ‘hot and high’ performance which enables
sustained operations in the most challenging littoral and land environments.
The improved power and performance are complemented by an advanced Mission
System and supporting architecture which delivers a significant weapon
capability to the Battlefield Commander. Agile, responsive and strategically deployable, the T129 has versatility to support a number of missions such as armed reconnaissance and surveillance; anti-armor operations, discrete target elimination, escort, joint fires (direction of artillery, Forward Air Control and Naval Gunfire Support) and dynamic air threat suppression. • 24 hour sustained day/night all environment capability • Global operations with a reduced logistic footprint • Mission effectiveness achieved with high reliability, availability and maintainability associated with low operating cost • Open systems architecture enabling future cockpit, mission and weapons systems growth • Dual cockpit capability • Multiple weapons firing Lethality and deterrence have been enhanced with new modern precision air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles, modern rocket system, a battle proven off-axis cannon and an increased weapon payload. |

The T129 helicopter can be armed with 8 anti-tank guided missile and air-to-air missiles. The T-129 also has dual rocket system capability, deploying 70mm rockets 4 x 19 or 4x7 for ammunition commonality with Nato countries.. TheT-129 can carry four 70mm rocket launchers. A 20mm three-barrel Gatling-type turreted cannon with 500 rounds of ammunition is mounted under the nose. The T129 can be also equipped with Gun pods armed with 12.7 mm calibre machine gun. | ||||||||||||||||||||||

The
pilot and gunner cockpits are in a stepped tandem configuration. Both
cockpits are equipped with multifunction displays, which present information
from the integrated management system and provide a synthetic waypoint
map, navigation data, weapon status, weapon selection, communications
and aircraft / flight data. The displays are equipped with multifunction
keyboards. The T129 can be equipped with an automatic flight control
system, which provides nap-of-the-earth flight capability and the level
of stability for precise weapon aiming. A tactical navigation display
enhances mission management and situational awareness. |

Propulsion | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The
T129 helicopter has a fireproof engine compartment with two low-noise
LHTEC-CTS800-A4 turboshaft engines. The engines are separated, and there
are two separate fuel systems with cross-feed capability. The T129 can
climb at a rate of 11.3m per second. The maximum cruise speed of the
helicopter is 269 km with a maximum range of 561 km. The service ceiling
of the helicopter is 6,096 m, and the endurance is three hours. |
