New Ka-52M attack helicopter sight to promote night operations

The firepower of the upgraded Kamov Ka-52M helicopter gunships (nicknamed ‘Alligator’) will increase due to a new sight, which promotes the engagement of the weapons at night: the thermal vision channel of the sight doubles the detection and target identification range. The sight was upgraded according to the Syrian experience, where helicopters were mostly engaged at night. Ka-52 fired Vikhr guided missiles with a maximum range of 8 km in Syria.

Liteye and SAIC selected to provide C-UAS services and hardware to the US Government

Liteye System’s Inc. in partnership with SAIC was recently selected by the Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office (JCO) to provide approved Counter UAS services and hardware to the US Government. Liteye was chosen as an important part of the SAIC team to protect fixed locations under the Counter-UAS as a Service (CaaS) model. CaaS is defined as Contractor Owned Government Operated (COGO) or Contractor Owned Contractor Operated (COCO) solutions enabling the Department to effectively Detect, Identify, Track and Defeat adversarial UAS’ while meeting critical affordability and funding realities.

GA-ASI demonstrates air-to-air laser communications

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) successfully completed an air-to-air laser communication link between GA-ASI’s Laser Airborne Communication (LAC) terminals integrated onto two company-owned King Air aircraft. Laser communication is desirable for military applications because of its Low Probability of Intercept/Low Probability of Detection (LPI/LPD) and anti-jam capability that can support much higher data rates than radio frequency systems.

Aero Vodochody conducts maiden flight of L-159 T2X trainer prototype

In parallel with the support and maintenance of the existing L-159 aircraft, Aero Vodochody has been continuously working on upgrading its capabilities, with the main goal of providing an aircraft that will meet the demanding requirements of 5th generation combat pilot training. Last week, after four years of intensive work, the prototype (demonstrator) L-159 T2X took off from the airport in Vodochody. It is an aircraft on which engineers are testing new avionic systems and key design elements.

Brazilian Air Force participated in the Salitre IV Multinational Exercise

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) participated, from October 10 to 21, in the Multinational Combined Air Exercise SALITRE IV. The air combat training, promoted by the Chilean Air Force (FACh), counts on the participation of air and human resources from the Air Forces of Argentina, Brazil and Chile, a cell of the United States Space Force, in addition to observers from Canada, Peru, Mexico and Uruguay, for joint action in the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) standard.

GA-ASI SeaGuardian begins operations for Japan Coast Guard

On October 19, 2022, the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) commenced flight operations using an MQ-9B SeaGuardian Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI). JCG is operating the SeaGuardian from the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Air Station Hachinohe. The RPA will primarily perform Maritime Wide Area Search (MWAS) over the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. Other missions will include search and rescue, disaster response, and maritime law enforcement.

Finnish Hornets and French Rafales to train during Exercise Täppä 22

Lapland Air Command’s Fighter Squadron 11 will arrange the Täppä 22 exercise at Rovaniemi and Oulunsalo air bases on 31 October – 4 November 2022. The exercise will involve Finnish F/A-18 Hornets and French Rafales.

Royal Australian Air Force P-8A maritime patrol aircraft completes first mission with NATO’s operation Sea Guardian

NATO has forged a new partnership with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) through its maritime security operation in the Mediterranean. A RAAF P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft deployed from its base in Edinburgh, South Australia, to Sigonella, Italy, accompanied by a team of 45 crew, maintenance, and security personnel from the RAAF’s 11 Squadron.
