The
Brazilian Air Force (FAB) is the air branch of the
Brazilian Armed Forces. The FAB was formed when
the Army and Navy air branch were merged into a
single military force initially called "National
Air Forces". The Brazilian Air Force is controlled
by the Air Command (CAer) subordinated to the Ministry
of Defence, and it is organised into three general
commands. The CAer also controls three other departments:
the acquisition and withdrawal department, the civil
aviation department and the training department.
The Brazilian Air Force is the largest air force
in South America, with about 670 aircrafts in services
and 68,000 personnel on active duty, including 3,500
conscripts. An additional 7,600 civilian personnel
are employed.
