The
birth of Cuban military aviation is marked by the
foundation of the Cuerpo Aéreo del Ejército
in March 1915. The first aircraft acquired by the
military was a Curtis FS. From 1918, a group of
33 Cubans was sent to France in support of the allied
powers during the First World War. The Cuban air
force (In Spanish: Defensa Anti-Aérea Y Fuerza
Aérea Revolucionaria) would comprise 3 air
regions and 4 subordinate commands, but only two
regiments survive as active units. In 1990, Cuba's
Air Force was the best equipped in Latin America.
In all, the modern Cuban Air Force imported approximately
230 fixed-wing aircraft.
Cuban Air Force personnel: 22,000 including air
defence forces with 11,000 conscripts.
