The first helicopters arrived to the permanent deployment base at Uprun airfield in Chelyabinsk region and a military unit in Murmansk region. Uprun will get several more Mi-8MTV-5-1 helicopters by the end of the month, the Russian Helicopters said.

"The rescue service of the Gagarin Cosmonauts Training Center will operate the helicopters in Chelyabinsk region. Kazan-made Mi-8MTV-5-1 rotorcraft are used to search for landed cosmonauts in Kazakh steppe. In Murmansk region the helicopters will operate in the Arctic," it said.

Military-transport Mi-8MTV-5-1 helicopter supplied to various law enforcement agencies belongs to Mi-8/17 family. It transports four tons of cargoes and hardware and can be engaged in search and rescue operations and various specialized missions. The cockpit is equipped with lighting adapted for night vision goggles which provides for night flights at low and extremely low altitudes and landing on unmarked sites.

The helicopter is equipped with modern communications. It is powered by two Klimov TV3-117VM turboshaft engines. The RusAF received the first ones in 2012.
