Greek Air Force joins two EDA European Defence Agency projects in air domain

Greece has officially joined the C-27J Spartan Cooperation program under the European Defence Agency (EDA), starting in March. This membership will contribute to enhancing the tactical airlifting capabilities of the C-27J military transport aircraft among the participating EU member states. For the first time, the Hellenic Air Force will contribute an aircraft to the European Spartan Exercise 2024. Additionally, Greece has become the 19th member of the EDA's initiative for Multilateral Air Transport Training and Exercises.

As the latest participant in the C-27J cooperation program, Greece joins Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Romania, and Slovakia in a collective effort that commenced in 2020. The program focuses on improving equipment, training, operational consistency, and fleet availability by sharing resources and knowledge among the member states.

Greece's inclusion was formalized through a Statement of Accession signed by its Minister of National Defence, signaling the nation's commitment to this collaborative effort. The upcoming European Spartan Exercise 2024, slated for 30 September to 11 October in Romania, will see the inaugural participation of a Hellenic Air Force aircraft, following successful exercises in Romania and Bulgaria in previous years.

Furthermore, Greece's engagement in the Multilateral Air Transport Training and Exercises Initiative as the 19th signatory exemplifies its dedication to collaborative European defense efforts. This initiative, launched in May 2018, aims to facilitate and improve training and exercise opportunities across EDA member states, promoting efficiency and interoperability.

The EDA plays a critical role in supporting its 27 member states by enhancing defense capabilities through cooperation, acting as a central hub for collaborative capability projects and fostering European defense interoperability.
