The Austrian Ministry of Defense announced on September 20, 2023, the decision to select the Embraer C-390 Millennium multi-mission medium military aircraft as its new tactical transport solution. Austria is expected to acquire 4 or 5 of these aircraft to modernize its fleet. The C-390 Millennium aircraft is set to replace Austria's aged fleet of Lockheed Martin C-130Ks.

Austria joins Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, and the Netherlands as the future operator of the C-390 Millennium multi-mission platform.
The C-390 is a multi-mission medium military transport aircraft designed to set new standards in its category. Some of the strong aspects of the aircraft are increased mobility, rugged design, higher flexibility, state-of-the-art proven technology, and easier maintenance. Flying faster and delivering more cargo, both the C-390 Millennium and the KC-390 variant are the right-sized platforms for major deployment scenarios. Minimized interventions and on-condition maintenance combined with highly reliable systems and components support reduced downtime and costs, contributing to outstanding availability levels and low life cycle costs.
The C-390 Millennium is fully operational and, since receiving its first aircraft in 2019, the Brazilian Air Force has deployed the airlift on several critical missions in Brazil. In Europe, the increase is motivated by lessons learned from the Afghanistan evacuations in 2021 and to respond to the dramatically changed security situation on Europe’s eastern flank.
