Belarus ramps up modernization of R-27 air-to-air missiles


The Belarussian defense industry is ramping up modernization and refurbishment of Vympel R-27 (NATO reporting name: AA-10 Alamo) air-to-air missiles, the country’s State Military-Industrial Committee (Goskomvoenprom) reported on September 7.

“[Some] 180 R-27 air-to-air missiles have been repaired and activated since 2019,” said Goskomvoenprom in a news release.

According to the organization, the upgraded R-27 missile is designed to engage fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles round-the-clock at medium distances.

The R-27 missiles are modernized at a plant near Orsha. The specialists of the enterprise repair the electronic components of the weapon.

The R-27 is among the world’s most popular air-to-air missiles.
