According to the state corporation Rostec, the A-50U Awacs would have new and improved capabilities. The device could detect new types of aircraft and have the ability to track a greater number of targets simultaneously compared to its predecessor. Modern equipment would also contribute to a reduction in the aircraft's weight, increasing its operational range and flight time.

According to Rostec, the A-50U would have modern electronics and improved performance metrics. The radar display system has new LCD screens with higher size and resolution. The device would also have a redesigned navigation and piloting system. It could finally identify bomber-class targets up to 650 kilometers away and cruise missiles up to 215 kilometers away.

Russia's electronic warfare system is reportedly being strengthened in anticipation of upcoming deliveries of F-16 multirole fighter jets and possibly ATACMS.

The A-50U is currently used in Ukraine by the Russian army. The aircraft provides long-range surveillance, command and control capabilities, and early warning of aerial threats.
