The C-130J "Super Hercules" is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. The improvements built into the C-130J, which entered production in 1997, have enhanced the performance of the aircraft in terms of its range, cruise ceiling time to climb, speed and airfield requirements. The Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules is the world's most advanced tactical airlifter. Designed and developed with mission flexibility in mind - combat delivery, air-to-air refueling, special operations, disaster relief and humanitarian missions - the C-130J has a unique mix of agility and performance to consistently operate at very high tempo operations efficiently and reliably. The C-130J Super Hercules is the only airlifter with the range and flexibility for emerging theaters and evolving concepts of operation. This tactical transport aircraft has already proven itself in many kinds of missions, many in the harshest operating conditions possible. |

Design | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The C-130J is the newest version of the Hercules and the only model still in production. Externally similar to the classic Hercules in general appearance, the J-model features considerably updated technology. These differences include new Rolls-Royce AE 2100 D3 turboprops with Dowty R391[2] composite scimitar propellers, digital avionics (including head-up displays (HUDs) for each pilot), and reduced crew requirements. These changes have improved performance over its C-130E/H predecessors, such as 40% greater range, 21% higher maximum speed, and 41% shorter takeoff distance.[3] The J-model is available in a standard-length or stretched -30 variant.

The C-130J is crewed by two pilots and a loadmaster. The new glass cockpit features four L-3 display systems multifunction liquid crystal displays for flight control and navigation systems. The cockpit is fitted with the Northrop Grumman low-power colour radar display. The map display shows digitally stored map image data. The C-130J is equipped with a Honeywell dual embedded global positioning system / inertial navigation system (GPS/INS), an enhanced traffic alerting and collision avoidance system (E-TCAS), a ground collision avoidance system, SKE2000 station keeping system, and an instrument landing system (ILS).
The C-130J is equipped with the ATK AN/AAR-47 missile warning system uses electro-optic sensors to detect missile exhaust and advanced signal processing algorithms and spectral selection to analyse and prioritise threats. The C-130J uses a BAE Systems AN/ALR-56M radar warning receiver and the Lockheed Martin AN/ALQ-157 infra-red countermeasures system generates a varying frequency-agile infra-red jamming signal. The navigation and weather radar of the C-130J is made by Northrop Grumman, its installed in the upward hinged dielectric radome in the nose of the aircraft. |

The C-130J is motorized with four Allison AE2100D3 turboprop engines, each rated at 4,591 shaft horsepower (3,425kW). The all-composite six-blade R391 propeller system was developed by Dowty Aerospace.

Capabilies | ||||||||||||||||||||||
Range, power, performance, safety redundancy, reliability, sophisticated avionics all come with the C-130J Super Hercules - an aircraft that can meet virtually any airlift mission requirement. With Rolls-Royce AE2100D3 engines and Dowty R391 six-bladed composite propellers, the Super Hercules operates in hot climates, handling short, high-elevation airstrips with maximum payload.
The Super Hercules transports 33 percent more payload, using half the crew, while burning less fuel and flying faster, farther and higher than its predecessors. - Faster: The C-130J is faster and climbs more quickly, offers 21% more speed. Time-to-climb is slashed by 50% over earlier model C-130s. - Higher: The C-130J flies higher, climbs over the weather and has a 40% greater cruising altitude than the C-130H. Farther: The C-130J flies much farther with less fuel, provides up to 40% greater range than the C-130H. Clearly, Lockheed Martin has gone much farther than simply producing an upgrade to the legendary C-130. Virtually every system, component and structural part of the Super Hercules has been chosen to yield a maximum performance airlifter, which is why the aircraft has so quickly gained worldwide appeal. In the United States, the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Marine Corps and Coast Guard rely on the C-130J. International C-130J operators include the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy and Denmark with Norway, Canada and India soon joining their ranks. Many nations are taking notice of the outstanding performance improvements of the Super Hercules, which is why global appeal for the aircraft is growing so fast. |
