Description

The Mi-17 is a Russian-made helicopter currently in production at two factories in Kazan and Ulan-Ude. Mi-17 medium twin-turbine multipurpose helicopter is a deep modernization of well-reputed Mi-8 rotorcraft. Its versatility and high performance characteristics made it the most popular helicopter in the world. Over 11,000 Mi-8/Mi-17 helicopters have been produced so far. They are in service in 80 countries now. At present, Kazan Helicopters JSC serially produces three main modifications of Mi-8 rotorcraft, the Mi-172 is a passenger version. It is intended for transportation of 28 passengers. Special VIP-versions for 7-11 passengers are also produced. The MM7-V5 is a transport version. It is intended for cargo transportation inside the cabin and by the external sling. It can also be used for the transportation of 36 service passengers. The Mi-17-1V is a multipurpose helicopter. On the basis of this modification, various versions (military, flying hospital, etc.) can be produced. Mi-17 helicopter modernization leads to a considerable improvement of performance characteristics and to the reduction of operational costs. New VK-2500 high-altitude engines and Safir auxiliary power unit were installed on the helicopter and tested in Tibet. The test results showed that these new components provide: an increase of take-off weight up to 13,500 kg; an increase of rate of climb by 3 m/sec; an increase of service ceiling up to 6,500 m; an increase of hovering ceiling up to 4,500 m; a possibility of starting the engines in the temperature range from -40° to +40°C and at an altitude over 6,000 m. The installation of main rotor blades of an upgraded shape and with swept ends, made of composite materials considerably improves the helicopter's performance characteristics and reduces its operational costs. The X-shaped tail rotor allows widening yaw control margin, increasing service life and reducing the noise.

Design
Developed from the basic Mi-8 airframe, the Mi-17 was fitted with the larger TV3-117MT engines, rotors, and transmission developed for the Mi-14, along with fuselage improvements for heavier loads. To facilitate the loading and unloading, its compartment area is equipped with a left and right sliding door and an hydraulic cargo ramp placed in the tail section of the fuselage. The all-metal riveted fuselage of a semi-monocoque type is made of aluminum alloys. The fuselage comprises three compartments including a crew compartment, a cargo/passenger cabin and a tail boom. The cabin is light and capacious due to its modular semi-monocoque structure. This design also allows fitting the helicopter with additional equipment. Up to 4 tanks (895 L each) can be placed inside the cabin. Various variants of installations are possible, including simultaneous installation of fuel tanks, seats and jump-seats inside the cabin.
Avionic
The on-board systems allow the Mi-17 to operate day and night in all weather conditions. A new navigation system has been developed for this version that shows all of the piloting and navigation information on four multifunctional display screens, significantly reducing the crew’s workload.
Propulsion
Mi-17 helicopter is a classical single rotor helicopter with a five-blade main rotor and a three-blade tail rotor. The Mi-17 has two TV3-117VM engines (take-off power - 2,000 h.p.) produced by Klimov company. The tricycle landing gear is non-retractable with main rear gears. Two main protected fuel tanks are fastened outside on each side of the fuselage. An auxiliary power unit is intended for engine starting. It is placed in the engine nacelle behind the main gearbox. To extend the Mi-17 operational range and flight time, additional fuel tanks can be installed inside or outside the fuselage.
Accessories
To provide comfortable flight in cold climate regions, the Mi-17 can be equipped with K0-50 petroleum heater, which is installed in front of fuel tank, or over the right door. The helicopter can also be fitted with an air conditioner, when operated in hot climate. A version is also developed, where both a petroleum heater and an air conditioner can be installed.
External stores are mounted on weapons racks on each side of the fuselage. The Mi-17 has six external hardpoints. The Mi-17 is provided with missiles, bombs, small arms and cannons. It carries four missile launchers of the B8V20 type, with missiles launched with the aid of an on-board PUS-31-71 electrical fire control system. The Mi-17 can be also armed with GSh-23L 23mm guns and PKT machine-guns with independent power supply and remote control circuits.
