"During the Russian defense minister’s visit an agreement was reached under which Myanmar would purchase six Su-30 aircraft," Fomin said, adding that this plane "will become the main fighter jet of Myanmar Air Force to protect the territorial integrity and repel any terror threats."
The six Su-30 will bolster the Myanmar Air Force fleet, currently composed of MiG-29, Nanchang A-5, Chengdu F-7M and F-6 combat aircraft.
Fomin also reported that over 600 military from Myanmar are studying in Russian higher military educational institutions. "All of this promotes security in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim in general," he concluded. Su-30 is a Russian two-seater multirole fighter jet. It can carry a wide range of air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles and bombs on 12 suspensions. It is also armed with an inbuilt 30mm gun. |
