"Yes, the reconnaissance UAVs [being produced by the Kalashnikov Group] have been ordered," Krivoruchko said not specifying the details of the deal. He added that the Concern would unveil new variants of the ZALA UAVs at the Army 2016 military-technical forum outside Moscow in September 2016, including fixed-wing and rotor-wing small vehicles intended for tactical reconnaissance. The UAVs by the Kalashnikov Group would receive new types of payload, the CEO added. "Moreover, we will exhibit the family of new ground control stations integrated with an enhanced software and the latest variant of the real-time controller with an advanced multifunctional display and new working modes," Krivoruchko pointed out.

Previously, the Kalashnikov Group acquired the ZALA Company, a prominent Russian manufacturer of UAVs. At present, the Concern offers three types of fixed-wing [ZALA 421-08M, ZALA 421-16EM, and ZALA 421-16E] and two types of rotor-wing [ZALA 421-21 and ZALA 421-22] reconnaissance UAVs to domestic and foreign potential customers. ZALA 421-08M has an operational range of 15 km, ZALA 421-16EM of 25 km, ZALA 421-16E of 50 km, ZALA 421-21 of 2 km, and ZALA 421-22 of 5 km. The CEO of the Kalashnikov Group did not specify the types of the UAVs ordered by Russia`s MoD.

Previously, the ZALA Company was a supplier of unmanned aerial vehicles to the Russian emergency ministries and law enforcement agencies. The aforementioned order was the first acquisition of the ZALA-designed UAVs by the national military. According to Russian defense analysts, the MoD might have ordered the ZALA 421-16EM fixed-wing reconnaissance UAVs. The vehicle has a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 6.5 kg, a payload of 1 kg, an operational range of 25 km, an endurance of flight of 2.5 h, a wingspan of 1,810 mm, an operational altitude of 3,600 m, and a speed of 65-110 km/h. It is powered by single electric engine.

A source in the Russian defense industry said that the military had revealed its interest in the ZALA 421-16E UAVs. According to the data provided by the Kalashnikov Group, the vehicle has a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 10 kg, a payload of 1.5 kg, an operational range of 50 km, an endurance of flight of 4 h, a wingspan of 2,815 mm, an operational altitude of 3,600 m, and a speed of 65-110 km/h. The UAV is powered by single electric engine.
