SR-10 trainer aircraft started undergoing flight tests with Russian Air Force

The first prototype SR-10 trainer aircraft developed by Russia’s Modern Aviation Technologies Design Bureau has started undergoing flight tests at the Kubinka airfield near Moscow, a source in the Russian defense and industrial sector said on Tuesday.

"The SR-10 trainer aircraft with a forward-swept wing has started undergoing flight tests in Kubinka. In future, it may take up the niche of simple, light and cheap jet planes designed to acquire initial flying skills," the source said.

"The new SR-10 trainer can serve as a transitional plane from the Yakovlev Yak-152 to the Yak-130 [NATO reporting name: Mitten] aircraft," the source added.

According to the design bureau, a flight hour aboard the SR-10 trainer costs $2,500, which is three times cheaper compared to a flight hour aboard the Yak-130 plane, which is worth $8,000.

The Modern Aviation Technologies Design Bureau can deliver up to 100 SR-10 trainers to the Russian Aerospace Force.

According to the design bureau, the Russian Aerospace Force needs a transitional jet aircraft between the Yak-152 primary flying training plane and the Yak-130 combat trainer.

The SR-10 trainer is expected to complete trials in 2016. If the plane is purchased by the Russian Defense Ministry, its Ukrainian-made engine will be replaced with the Russian AL-55 propulsion unit.
