Russia and Iran plan to ink deal for Su-30SM fighter aircraft delivery in 2016

Russia will sign this year a contract with Iran to supply a batch of its Sukhoi Su-30SM multi-role fighter jets to the Islamic Republic, Russia's RIA news agency on Wednesday quoted a senior official at Russia's arms export agency as saying. “Iran has actually expressed its interest in the purchase of an order of Su-30SM fighters, but so far the parties are only discussing the issue in negotiations. The contract will be signed this year,” the official told RIA Novosti.

On Tuesday, Iranian Defense Minister Hosein Dehghan met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, and other officials in Moscow.

Iran is also due to start taking delivery of the S-300 missiles system from Russia in the next two months, a system that was blocked before the landmark nuclear deal with world powers.

The Sukhoi Su-30SM is a multi-role fighter aircraft developed by JSC Sukhoi Design Bureau for the Russian Air Force. The aircraft is a enhanced variant of the Su-30MK combat aircraft. The Su-30SM is equipped with The the Bars-R radar and the wide-angle HUD. It is powered by two AL-31FP by-pass turbojet reheated engines.
