"Contractor will provide aircraft protection technology from surface-to-air infrared missiles. Performance location will be at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, Ontario, Canada. Work is expected to be complete by Nov. 30, 2018," the US DoD added.

This conctract is 100 percent foreign military sales to Canada, the US DoD added.

Northrop's Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures, or LAIRCM, system is an active countermeasure that defeats the threat missile guidance system by directing a high-intensity modulated laser beam into the missile seeker.

The 15 CH-147F Chinook helicopters in service with the Royal Canadian Air Force are being operated by the 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, based out of CFB Petawawa.
