Russia activates new air regiment in Western Military District
 
Russia’s Western Military District has transformed an army aviation base into an air regiment, the district’s press office said today December 9, 2016. The new large unit has received Mil Mi-28N (NATO reporting name: Havoc) and Mi-35M (Hind) attack helicopters, the press office added.

"The large unit has been formed considering the purpose of the Mi-28N Night Hunter, Mi-35M and Mi-8MTV-5 [Hip] helicopters that are designed to eliminate armored vehicles, land troops, provide close air support, evacuate injured persons and transport cargo in the cabin or with an external sling," the press office said.

"The district’s air and air defense large unit will receive more than 10 aircraft, including Antonov An-148 transport planes and Mil Mi-35M [NATO reporting name: Hind] attack and Mi-8MTV-5 [Hip] military transport helicopters," the district's press office added in another statement.

According to the press office, this work has allowed optimizing the combat capabilities of the regiment and reequipping it with advanced helicopters.
