QinetiQ to evaluate upgrade to RAF Chinook Automatic Flight Control System
QinetiQ has been awarded a GPB5.2 million (USD 8mn) contract from the British Ministry of Defence in order to evaluate the possibility of an upgrade to the CH-47 Chinook’s Automatic Flight Control System. The evaluation is part of the MoD’s requirement to upgrade the Chinook Mk3 and Mk4/4A by integrating the JULIUS Cockpit Display System / Mission Avionic System and a Digital Automatic Flight Control System (DAFCS).

The upgrade of the Chinooks will be carried out by Boeing which is the main contractor. QinetiQ will provide its services as an independent technical evaluator and advisor to the MoD’s Chinook Project Team. At a next stage, QinetiQ and Boeing, along with the frontline units, will conduct ground and flight tests of the modified aircraft.

QinetiQ’s work will be delivered to the British MoD through the Air Test & Evaluation Centre (ATEC). The centre was founded in 2001 from QinetiQ and the Air Warfare Centre (AWC), combining the company’s engineering capabilities with the AWC’s operational experience and expertise. ATEC provides the MoD with independent test and evaluation for the next generation of military aircraft.
