The Russian MOD ordered a deep modernization of the Tu-95MS strategic bombers to the level of the Tu-95MSM. The contract for the work was signed with Tupolev PJSC.

As part of the modernization, the Tu-95MSM  received a new radar, a new information display system, a modernized defense complex, modernized NK-12MPM turboprop engines with the installation of new AV-60T propellers.

The Tu-95MSM is the first strategic missile carrier. It is designed to conduct combat missions while protecting the country's remote borders. The aircraft can carry six missiles on an internal rotary launcher, while the modernized Tu-95MSM variant can carry an additional eight to ten missiles under its reinforced wings.
