A report on Iranian station Press TV stated: “Military sources say with this is clear violation of Iran’s air space. The electronic operations of the Iranian armed forces to locate enemy aerial vehicles will not be limited to the country’s borders anymore.”

This latest incident adds to the tension between Iran and the West in the same week Iranian diplomats in London were expelled from the UK and the British embassy in Tehran was attacked.

The first images broadcast by Iranian television, and our analysis shows that the drone could be the RQ-170 Lockheed Martin.

The RQ-170 Sentinel is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by Lockheed Martin and operated by the United States Air Force (USAF). It has been deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In August 2010 it was reported that RQ-170s either had been or were about to be redeployed to Afghanistan and that the UAVs had been fitted with a full motion video capability.

The "RQ" designation indicates that the RQ-170 Sentinel does not carry weapons.
