Saab Gripen NG wins Brazil jet fighter F-X2 competition and outbid Dassault Rafale and Boeing F-18.

The Brazilian ministry of defence annouced today that the F-X2 winner is Saab's Gripen NG. It seems the cheapest solution has been chosen over Boeing F/A-18 and Dassault Rafale (known to have the higher price). 36 jet fighters will be ordered by Brazilian Air Force (FAB).

The minister said that the "choice was based on the balance between three points: technology transfer, the price of the aircraft and the cost of its maintenance." However, the choice of Gripen NG was a surprise, as analysts expected rather a duel between Dassault and Boeing.

The Swedish company played its cards after news of U.S. spying on Brazilians helped derail Boeing's chances for the deal. the 36 fighters will be delivered to Brazil before 2020. Embraer will also benefit from the technological and economical offsets from Sweden and Saab.
