The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) is the air branch of the Brazilian Armed Forces. The FAB was formed when the Army and Navy air branch were merged into a single military force initially called "National Air Forces". The Brazilian Air Force is controlled by the Air Command (CAer) subordinated to the Ministry of Defence, and it is organised into three general commands. The CAer also controls three other departments: the acquisition and withdrawal department, the civil aviation department and the training department. The Brazilian Air Force is the largest air force in South America, with about 670 aircrafts in services and 68,000 personnel on active duty, including 3,500 conscripts. An additional 7,600 civilian personnel are employed.
