Bombardier Global 5000 aircraft receives military certification at WTD 61 in Manching, Germany.
 
In the context of modernizing the medium-and long-range fleet of the FMOD special air mission wing, the Bundeswehr Technical and Airworthiness Center for Aircraft (WTD 61) in Manching has issued airworthiness certificates for 4 new aircraft of the Bombardier Global 5000 type. Several special retrofits and modifications on the Challenger successor required appropriate tests and demonstrations in order to facilitate certification.

Between 14 and 16 February 2012 the first of the Global 5000s with the military tail number 1401 briefly found a new home in Manching. Important system tests were carried out at WTD 61 for which a carefully planned test setup on site and cooperation with WTD 81 in Greding was required.

The engineers started to work on the modifications a short time thereafter so that the test campaign with the modified system could take place on 16 February as planned. Thus it was possible to rapidly collect the data required for comparison and advance the certification of certain subsystems. Subsequently 1401 was transferred to Berlin Schönefeld where its original condition was restored to by Lufthansa Technik.

The entire measure not only required highly efficient coordination but also the full commitment and the outstanding expertise of numerous specialists - beginning with the Director Airworthiness via the hangar manager, the maintenance engineers and flight test experts down to the trailer driver who effortlessly guided the elegant and valuable diva to its parking position between closely parked fighter aircraft. Experts from all fields cooperated and worked towards the set goals in a highly motivated manner. The success of this venture demonstrated WTD 61´s potential as a competent team player in complex technical scenarios.
