Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd., South Korea's sole aircraft manufacturer and total systems integrator, said Tuesday, September 16, that it has inked a deal to build a state-of-the-art development center as it prepares to launch the KF-X fighter program. The new design and testing center for fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft will be completed in November 2015 and be able to house 2,000 research and development personnel.

Lockheed Martin, in partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the University of Notre Dame, has demonstrated the airworthiness of a new beam control turret being developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and AFRL to give 360-degree coverage for high-energy laser weapons operating on military aircraft. A research aircraft equipped with the Aero-adaptive Aero-optic Beam Control (ABC) turret conducted eight flights in Michigan.

The University of Texas at San Antonio has received a $300,000 grant from the Defense Department to conduct a study on brain-controlled unmanned aerial vehicles. UTSA’s unmanned systems laboratory will work to find out how to operate small UAVs for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations of the military by using brain signals, UTSA said Thursday.
