Danish government strongly eyes F-35 to replace ageing fleet of F-16s

The Danish government will recommend the purchase of 27 new F-35A Lightning II fighter jet, the Danish TV2 broadcaster said on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources. Earlier in the day, the local Denmark Radio (DR) station said the F-35s have been recently mentioned in Denmark as the most preferred jets to replace the currently used military aircraft.

Subject to parliamentary approval, it is believed an order has already been placed with the American manufacturer and all of Denmark’s F-16s will be phased out by 2024, unveils the local media CHP Post.
The F-35 made by Lockheed Martin was chosen over Boeing’s Super Hornet, despite Boeing's aggressive advertising campaign, the four-nation Eurofighter Typhoon consortium that includes Airbus Group, the two other contenders for the massive Danish contract. Although the F-35 jets will reportedly cost $85 million each, the final cost is as yet unknown. According to a recent Radio24syv report, the total cost for 28 fighter aircraft over a 30-year lifespan including equipment and maintenance could run as high as $15 billion. |
