Boeing wins a $25mn contract for preliminary work on next-gen Air Force One aircraft
 
Boeing has been awarded a $25,776,011 contract for Presidential Aircraft Recapitalization Program Phase 1 Pre-Milestone B activities, the United States Department of Defense announced on Jan. 29, 2016. Under this contract, Boeing will conduct activities aimed at improving affordability and reducing program execution risk.

These activities will include the definition of detailed requirements and design trade-offs required to support informed decisions. These will lead to a lower-risk engineering and manufacturing development program and lower life-cycle costs. These activities will be performed at Seattle, Washington; and Everett, Washington, and are expected to be completed by April 21, 2017.

The US Air Force said Friday it will issue post-award modifications to procure Boeing’s 747-8 commercial aircraft to serve as a basis for the company to design and build the future presidential plane.

This contract gets us started on determining how to modify a 747-8 to become the next Air Force One, and finding opportunities for cost reduction through detailed requirements choices, competition of subsystems, and in the sustainment of the aircraft after it has been fielded,” noted USAF Col. Amy McCain, PAR program manager.

We will ensure the next Air Force One meets the necessary capabilities established to execute the presidential support mission,” added AF Secretary Deborah Lee James.

The military branch expects the life span of the next presidential aircraft to last for up to 30 years. The Air Force now operates two VC-25s, specially configured Boeing 747-200Bs.

The service first announced in January 2015 its selection of the Boeing 747-8 platform for the program.
