"All the upgraded systems onboard the first modernized Il-76MDM heavy military transport aircraft are planned to be tested during the factory ground and flight trials, in particular, the attitude and heading reference system, radio communications, lighting and furnishing equipment and weapons," the press office said.

According to the press office, the modernization project of the aircraft has been developed by the Ilyushin Aviation Complex to upgrade the operational Il-76M and Il-76MD heavy military transport planes. The Il-76MDM modernisation involves refurbishing the aircraft's existing engines and equipping them with many of the new systems installed on the Il-76MD-90A.

The aircraft’s service life has been extended from 30 to 40 years.

The upgraded Il-76MDM aircraft performed its first flight on February 28, 2016. Its upgrade started in 2014.
