Italian Army received first LOAM-equipped NH90 helicopter

The Italian Army has its first NH90TTH helicopter equipped with the Laser Obstacle Avoidance and Monitoring system operation. The LOAM was developed, produced and delivered by Finmeccanica - Selex ES, after the completion of the validation tests, which were carried out in cooperation with the Italian MoD's Aeronautical and Navigation Equipment Directory (ARMAREO).

LOAM provides the helicopters with the capability to detect very thin obstacles, such as power lines or other sorts of cables, pillars and other similar ones. Therefore, flight safety is enhanced significantly, especially during low-level flying or in low-visibility conditions, whether it is during day or night.

LOAM uses a 1.55µm Erbium laser source to scan for the obstacles. The system has overcome the drawbacks and complexity of mechanical steered solutions by performing coil-shaped "Palmer Scan" pattern. The returned echo is analyzed with the system's computer algorithm, providing the crew with warning and information of the obstacle's position on the multi-function display. LOAM has also been tested and proved its capability to superimpose obstacle symbols over a FLIR image.

The system has already been operational with the Royal Danish Air Force AgustaWestland EH-101 helicopters. The Italian Army will use it not only aboard the NH90 but also on the CH-47F and AW-101 CSAR helicopters.
